Calling all bird lovers to Crown River Safari! The area has an incredibly rich cultural history and is primly situated at the ecotone between several key habitats in the Eastern Cape. There have been 174 recorded bird species within the urban area, of which 104 species are likely to breed regularly.
To start your birding adventure, Crown River Safari recommends two apps that you can easily download ‘Sasol eBirds Southern Africa’ and ‘eBird’. They are easy to use and will introduce you to birdwatching.
First, we will explain the basics of binoculars and then recommend some useful and easy tips for successful birding.
- If you wish to do the bird watching with a specialized guide, we also offer this option.
- Be quiet, so that you don’t scare the birds away. Also, if you are quiet then you might even be able to hear them sing.
- Try not to shout when you see a bird; just point so that other people can see the bird too.
- Be sneaky. Move slowly and quietly so you don’t scare the birds away.
- Be observant. Birds could be on the ground, behind a bush, in a tree, or in the sky, so look everywhere!
- If you are using binoculars, be very careful with them. Make sure they are focused so that you can see through them clearly.

Birding - Guided River Boat
BIRDING Guided River Boat Birding
For us the birding river cruise has become famous in recent years as the most accessible location at which to see the impressive pair of nesting African Fish Eagles, which have nested here since at least 2010. We are further home to the Cape Eagle-owl, nesting pair of Crown Eagle and Kingfishers, just some of the kaleidoscope of bird species nesting in habitation along the riverbanks.
Begin a river cruise from the lodge on the upper Kariega River side at the crown of two rivers where the Settlers Dam is situated, east of the Kariega and Palmiet River’s confluence. Its purpose is recreation and water supply for Grahamstown.
The river also supports the resident Cormorants along the cliff edge making their breeding home out of a low-lying tree cascading over the river’s edge. Because of their black colouration, Cormorants are often referred to as sea crows.
CONSERVATION STATUS: Endangered (decreasing population)
A 2-hour visit should be sufficient to find these species though, importantly, the Eagle owls are not always visible. The best approach to finding the owls is to scan the shaded walls of its known location on the river edge but be warned that their plumage is incredibly camouflaged.

Embark on a self-guided walk through the terrain of the reserve where there is acacia grassland, dwarf shrub steppe, and dry temperate savannah followed by tall sub succulent woodland and on open plain with semi-karroid growth.
Every step unveils the mysteries of nature. As you wander through the pathways, keep an attentive eye out for animal tracks and signs, honing your spoor identification skills as you trek. Take moments to pause and marvel at the diverse array of trees towering above, testing your tree identification prowess with each unique specimen you encounter. Listen closely to the melodic symphony of birdcalls echoing through the canopy, challenging yourself to identify the various avian species that call this habitat home. If you are fortunate, you may even catch a glimpse of elusive wildlife, employing animal stalking techniques learned through observation and study.
While a self-guided walk offers independence, the journey is enriched by your own curiosity and knowledge, allowing you to connect with the natural world on a deeper level. Crown River Safari has the necessary facilities such as, boats, Kayaks, and equipment rental services to accommodate guests interested in freshwater fishing. We offer guided fishing excursions led by an experienced angler who can provide instruction, assistance, and insights into the local ecosystem and fish species. Anglers can potentially catch various freshwater fish species. Some common fish found in this type of habitat might include largemouth bass carp, and eels, and bluegill, among others.
However, the specific fish species present can vary depending on factors such as water temperature, habitat structure, and local management practices.

Historically the Eastern Cape is one of the most interesting areas of South Africa, originally the home of the Khoi and San people responsible for the magnificent Rock Art of the Eastern Cape. The Khoi and San were sandwiched between European settlements and expansionism from the Cape in the South and the Xhosa expansionism from the north. The Eastern Cape is known as Frontier Country, as more than a 100 years of war was fought between European Settlers and the Xhosa along the frontier of the Great Fish River. The area was also the birthplace and ancestral home of the internationally recognized statesman Mr. Nelson Mandela.
The Eastern Cape stretches in the North from the Umtamvuna River Gorge, which forms the boundary of the Eastern Cape with KwaZulu Natal, down the Eastern Seaboard of South Africa, bounded by the warm Indian Ocean, encompassing the beautiful Wild Coast of what has been known as the Transkei, the port cieties of East London and Port Elizabeth and ending in the beautiful Tsitsikamma Forest area of the famous Garden Route near Storms River Mouth and Natures Valley. The Bloukrans river forms the boundary between the Eastern and Western Cape and is spanned by the largest single span concrete arch bridge in the world, where, from the northern bank on the Eastern Cape side, the highest Bungee Jump in the world at 216 meters awaits.
